Visiting Stephens studio is an amazing experience. To say his art is unique is an understatement. He has developed not only a strong style with his paints but adds the texture and vibrancy of layering metal leaf, resin and varnish. His art literally feels alive!Beyond his creative talent, youll also enjoy stopping by his studio if you are in Asheville to just visit with him and Joy. They are a very fun and welcoming couple.

We had Stephen create a painting for our living room from a picture I took on my iPhone of Waterfall Park located here on Gateway Mountain which is just east of Asheville. The end result was absolutely stunning and looks great in our home and more importantly reminds us of what a beautiful place we live in. We look forward to work with Stephen on another piece of artwork in the future!

This gallery will bring joy to when you visit. I have one of his paintings hanging in my home and it hangs in a location I pass many times a day and I smile every time I do. Sometimes with my face and sometimes just in my heart, but every time it brings me JOY.

An amazing artist who uses a unique method to paint. I own two of his artworks and have visited his studio. It is a must visit if you are in Asheville. His creativity and talent will supersede your expectations. A visit to Asheville would not be complete without a St Claire studio stop.

Stephens art is incredible. Viewed online, his work is beautiful, but in person, each work just glows with life and light, movement and/or living stillness. I grew up in the mountains, so Im particularly in love with his collection of mountain pieces. These works capture a wide spectrum of mood and scenery in a way that transports the viewer to the scenes themselves. And to top it all, he is a laid-back, friendly guy, a great listener, and so easy to work with.

Stephen did a large commission for us and it turned out fantastic! The piece was something totally new for him (underwater fish) and he was very enthusiastic about the challenge. It turned out so well, we are going to challenge him again!

Unique artist! I visited Asheville and fell in love with his work - and wound up reaching out via email and commissioning a large piece of abstract art! The artist was fantastic to work with, reflected my vision perfectly, and delivered the painting to my door. I cannot recommend highly enough. Go check out his work!

I came into this studio a couple of years ago on my way to the mountains. The photos of the paintings I saw on the website tonight are miraculously, even more beautiful than the paintings I saw when I was there. Next time I win the lottery, Im there.... worth every penny.

A most unique approach to landscapes using reflected light within the pieces. Luminance invites the viewer to enter the artists vision of the subject. The gallery is a journey through beautiful experiences.

Fantastic gallery. Art work is amazing and it is also very interesting to watch him or his wife do their work. Bought a small piece and it was damaged during shipping and they repaired it to the point of not being able to see where it was damaged. Looking forward to next time we can go see them.

We visited and saw a painting we loved, but it was landscape formatted and we needed it to be portrait formatted. We commissioned the painting in the portrait format and were pleased with the whole process. We will definitely be going back.

On of my favorite Asheville Artists! We drive from Columbia, SC to look at their work because its so breathtaking. Weve bought from his wife and daughter as well and look forward to slowly adding to our collection with some of his larger pieces. The photos online dont do the work justice, you have to see these in person.

One of the top galleries in the River Arts District in Asheville, NC. Truly exceptional oil paintings. Stephen uses a unique combination of aluminum, oil and resin that allows light to reflect and bounce from different perspectives. It was nice to see him at work in the gallery and talk to him about his unique process. Definitely coming back when were in Asheville!

We drove to Asheville specifically to visit St. Claire Art, though we also intended to browse several of the River Arts District galleries. We had seen photographs of Stephen St. Claires paintings, and we were attracted to what we could see in those photos. The actual paintings were far more engaging than the photographic representations. Stephen combines a cultivated talent for seeing his subjects with a highly unusual technique that adds color, depth, and a fresh perspective to scenes that would otherwise be the subject of conventional representational painting. Even though we had already consumed our normal annual budget for art, we happily purchased one of his brilliantly expressed landscapes.Several months have passed since the purchase and everyday we are delighted with the painting. It adds vivacity, color, and a bridge among our electic collection of oils, acrylics, and watercolors that included impressionism, neoimpressionism, abstract, and expressionist works. As if the art were not enough, Stephen and Joy are personable, friendly, and helpful. Meeting them was actually great fun.

Love Steves style and brilliant scenes. We have a number of his paintings located around our West Asheville residence and they brighten up each room where they hang.

I was in Asheville on a short visit with my parents. On one of these days, we decided to check-out the art area.As I was meandering through the labyrinth that is the River Arts District, I came across a lot of what youd expect to be there: tons of abstraction, tons of tea cups & the like. Stereotypically, this average polyglot-which, for some reason, many are in love with-was plainly said: a bore...How lucky was I that my mode of blindly navigating the many paths led me to Stephens studio.I vividly remember the first piece I saw: it was a landscape-full of trees. And, yes Ive seen other tree-landscapes, but this one was something much different. The light reflected from an amazing glaze finish, but there was also an inner-light emanating from what was the vanishing-point of the piece: simply breathtaking! After perusing the other great works towards the rear of the studio, I noticed that my mother had struck up a conversation with the working artist. Yes, he was in the midst of applying a modeling compound to an actual piece.I approached apprehensively, as I am not one to normally engage into this type of situation.Amazing fact #2: Stephen is one of the warmest-nicest guys Ive met, and I was only in the studio for a mere 45 mins. He was more-than-willing to share insights as to his process, and other similar inquiries-really open&cool guy!!!AND, what might be Stephens 2nd-best quality (#1: the art (its really a tie)) is he really cares about anyone and everyone who has the chance to explore his working-studio!Following my visit, I randomly emailed Stephen with a question on glazing, and he RESPONDED!!!!This is a rarified human-being: a master of his craft, and a lover of others.I know this is a long review, but I thought it necessary to opine. Please, follow, subscribe-to, purchase, or just take in the amazing pieces he is constantly creating!!!

Photos do not do these paintings justice - they need to be experienced in person. The painting technique gives so much depth and movement. Warning - you will be hooked.
