If you live in the Washington DC area or our planning to visit. I highly recommend you plan a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. I personally have visited Arlington National Cemetery so many times since I was fifteen years of age. Every time I visit is just as powerful as the first time. I recommend visiting in the fall and spring time when it is less humid. I personally recommend taking the metro to the Arlington Metro Stop in Virginia. The Metro stop is literally beside the main entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. You can drive to Arlington National Cemetery and lots of signs directing you to the Cemetery. Note there is a parking garage located in the Cemetery. Be prepared to wear comfortable walking shoes. Give your self a full day to visit Arlington National Cemetery. You would do no justice to rush your visit to Arlington National Cemetery. I highly recommend visiting JFK’s Grave and The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The changing of the guard is absolutely incredible . The soldiers are hand selected for this prestigious duty and come from the United States Army Third Infantry Old Guard. They are based out of FT Myer Virginia. Just be mindful that you are in a Cemetery and be very Respectful. When up at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier follow the directions of the Sgt. Of the Guard during the changing of the guard. Keep noise levels to a minimum. It really is an amazing place to visit and beyond powerful. Definitely visit the visitors center for all information and times of the changing of the guard.Be sure to bring a camera. The views of Washington are breathtaking from the Cemetery. Enjoy your visit!

This is supposed to be a somber, memorable experience. For every kind, caring staff member we encountered, there were 3 that all but assaulted us for walking down the wrong path or just to remind us to keep our masks on and stay 6 feet apart at all times (even though we were abiding those rules). It just felt like we were being harassed the entire time. Much better experience and much better maintained at the Luxembourg American Military Cemetary. Embarassing, considering thats not even in our country. I only gave 3 stars out of respect for those buried there and the few staff members that were kind.

A very powerful experience, so many important people have been buried in this massive cemetery. A perfect tribute to the brave veterans that have served our country. They have 20-30 funerals a week and we got to see a flyover as they buried a important general. Watching the changing of the guard was fantastic, they are so perfect in the way they march and their uniform pace, I had the neat experience to talk to a female guard that is 1 of 9 females ever to guard the grave of the fallen soldier. I went to Arlington to pay my respects, which I did. However, to look out over an ocean of gravestones is incredibly impactful. Knowing the vastness of the place is actually only a representation of all those who have died for our country is sobering. The Visitor Center has several excellent displays and it is a good way to ready your mind before walking the cemetery. If anyone ever needs a reminder of the cost of war, Arlington, like Gettysburg and so many other historical cemeteries and battlefield sites, teaches that lesson with few words. The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier happens on the hour and the location is a fifteen minute walk from the Visitor Center. There is a peaceful solace throughout the immaculate and beautiful grounds. With the Washington Monument and other landmarks rising in the backdrop, it occurred to me our bravest, even in death, serve as a reminder to those running our country of consequences of their decisions and actions.

Way Too much to share cause I would be typing all night. In my opinion to take it ALL in you definitely need more than 1 day. It was about 5 years ago on a church group trip when I first visited. Last year I went again and this time it was for the funeral of a friend of mine who is a retired Colonel. This in itself was an experience all by itself. Even if you are not attending the funeral of someone, if you can still manage to get close enough to just observe a funeral from a distance it would most definitely be one to remember. It is a most sacred, impressive and extremely well deserved final honor/tribute for any individual who has given their life for our great nation. In addition to the late President JFK there are many other famous people buried there. You can Google to find out who some of those are. Also do not forget to visit The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier when you visit. No disrespect meant to anyone, but things have changed drastically since I was at Arlington 10 years ago. Back then you could drive over the bridge, into the cemetery and go pretty much anywhere you wanted. This week, I discovered that visitors must now park, go through security through a developing visitor center. Visitors now have two options. One, you walk. Two, pay $15 /person for a tour shuttle. My reaction is that the hallowed ground of Arlington is now a money maker and in the process has lost some of its sacredness or cheapened it in a way. If it were a free shuttle and I was asked to donate, I would have no problem with that. Most visitors walking were were heading to or from the Tomb of the Unknowns. A fifteen minutes walk at least, mostly uphill, but not steep.I would give one star to the running of the operation. Five stars to the Old Guard and those who maintain the grounds. Thanks to those served.

Otherwise, you are free to explore by foot.Important stops include the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, JFK Grave Site and Eternal Flame, Arlington House - Robert E. Lee Memorial, Memorial Amphitheater and the Tomb of the Unknowns, where you can watch a most impressive Changing of the Guards Ceremony.Note: If you visit during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, you will find small U.S. flags placed in front of every gravestone in the cemetery. From Smithsonian Station, I rode the metros blue line to Arlington to shoot some pics. I got some lovely shots of JFK’s eternal flame, Bobby Kennedy’s little cross, President Taft’s grave, and the final resting place of DC architect, Pierre L’Enfant. The land on which the cemetery now exists has a bit of a storied past, being initially purchased in 1778 by George Washington’s stepson, John Parke Custis. It then passed to John’s son, George, who built a house there in 1802, and then to George’s daughter, Mary, who married Robert E. Lee, the man who would go on to lead the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The decision to convert the land into a cemetery for thousands of Union dead was intended (at least partly) as a slap in the face to Lee, who had been branded a traitor to his country. The first officers buried at Arlington lined the garden next to the house. These days, the headstones of dead soldiers pepper the landscape about as far as one can see.

It was something you just need to see in person. Incredible history, reverence and respect. The staff are friendly and helpful.

This was far more elaborate and larger than I ever imagined. So much history at the Arlington National Cemetery. You could spend am entire day here and still miss a lot. It was a great honor to have the opportunity to visit this place.
