The staff was friendly and welcoming. They tried their best to work with what they had.A shell of its former self, the Potawatomi Inn must have been something, before electricity.Dreadfully outdated with a hodge podge of scrapped over furniture, stained sheets, walls and floors our tranquility fled as fear filled the gaping wound of shock and awe.To bring this review up from the negative I borrowed a few stars from the following review of the grounds, setting and employees. Stunning views, trails and woods form a spectacular backdrop of this hotel of yesteryear.A sparkling light glistens off of the lake, docks, a fire pit and children played my on the lawn raise the expectations for a night of rest and fine dining. In all honesty we cannot say enough good about the staff. Friendly and caring they treated us and our concerns cheerfully and respectfully. After the first room with stained sheets, ants and a random flying bug we asked for another room. For the first time in our lives, we chose to ask for a refund. Alas this room as well had stained sheets, missing knobs from the furniture and unkept walls and sinks. At nearly $150 a night this hotel should be no more.In the end they gave us a full refund. The staff is stunning, the state however, gave them a soiled and beaten deck to deal with.Paddle away from this one.

Beautiful place for a wedding! Our son and daughter-in-law fell in love with Pokagon State Park and the Potawatomi Inn one Valentines day, and wanted to be married there. The Inn sits on a hill overlooking Lake James, and the Park offers hiking trails, boat rentals, horse back riding, and just a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy. The wedding was August 1, 2020, and it turned out beautifully, much of that was due to the Inn staff. We were so pleased with the upbeat and positive attitudes of all of the people that we interacted with at the Potawatomi Inn. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. They were in constant communication on every detail for several months, which was especially important as we navigated planning a wedding during a pandemic. Taylor in the Sales office was so organized, and she made sure we were on track with planning every step of the way. We had the rehearsal dinner in the Wigwam room at the Inn, which is a cozy historic room of brick with a fireplace. The dinner was excellent! The chef, Johnny, and the bar staff, Elizabeth, were a joy to be around for the whole family. The wedding ceremony was planned on the Sundeck, but it rained, so we just moved it to the Lake James room where the reception was planned, and it was all beautiful. I would highly recommend anyone wanting a wedding venue to consider the Potawatomi Inn as an option. Our guests stayed at the Inn, and once they arrived, they didnt need to drive anywhere else for the entire event. This was especially important for our out-of-state family members, and they were very grateful!

What a good place to be with your family, friends or even just as a couple. You could easily spend a week there. They have a good variety of rooms. They have regular hotel rooms, cabins for families, some for just two but each with a nice patio thats right on the lawn so you can come and go easily. There are rooms in the main inn also that are larger to cater to families. Its a very clean place. From the rooms to the public areas. And very friendly! All the staff have really good attitudes. They were fully booked and so busy. But we were always greeted with a smile and a then after with a Have a good day whether it was a person cleaning or the front desk staff.Being in a state park, there is SO much to do! Horseback riding (for a fee), hiking trails galore, bike paths and walking paths all the way into town. Theres a playground, nice beach and swim area. For getting out on the water you can rent paddle boats, stand up paddle boards, canoes, kayak, small fishing boats, pontoons and ski boats. Be sure to ask about them before you arrive. They have an indoor pool too with a hot tub and sauna. There is a big grassy knoll to run and play. A fire pit is available. Like volleyball? They have two sand courts. There is a Nature Center with activities. In the winter they have a Toboggan run! (Wish they had summer sleds alpine slide-like for it! ) There are several places for quiet relaxing as well. Love the view from the hallway by the diningroom and the big room there. Very comfy couches and chairs for a more secluded chat or just reading. They have a restaurant that serves all day. They also have a cafe that has good pizza, nachos and such, snacks, and ice cream.(Wish there were more picnic tables by the beach. Also more benches around the in the grass. They need more tables on the patio outside the cafe. They also need to put up a big fabric shade triangle or two, over them. The trees provide a little shade but only in the morning and evening. And not over the tables out there.)We cant leave out the town of Angola. We cant say enough about how great, and close, it is! ️ There is something for everyone right there! Outlets for shopping just minutes from the inn. There are a handful of antique shops in town and right down the road! Saw at least one spa. We played putt-putt/mini golf. Walmart, Meijer and Menards and several restaurants are just minutes away.Be sure to venture into town and check out the great local ice cream places and try one of the breakfast places! (And as a extra tip -- our coffee lovers highly recommend getting coffee at Five Lakes Coffee in town. For me their mango smoothies are IT )

Where to even begin, first they lie about the bed size. They charge for queen size but give you full. Second the rooms have dead bugs, they give you the lowest quality everything. The food is way overpriced and cheap quality small. They sell off their parking for events leaving people that are actually staying there without places to park and they could care less when you talk to the front desk. For the kind of money you spend you can expect motel 6 quality. Rude, wrong and not worth it.

Lovely spot for a Wintry weekend. Really enjoyed the toboggan ride (and the associated workout). Those things are really heavy so make sure youre prepared. Lodge itself is nice with a wide variety of spaces and activities to go. VERY family friendly. We saw a bunch of kids having a good time (while being well behaved). View from the porch was great and loved the birds frequenting the feederOur room was nice but dated. Everything looked very worn. The beds were not very comfortable and while each bed had 6 pillows (no joke!) None of them were particularly comfortable either. Heater kept it toasty even though it was 0 degrees outside.Tried the hot tub which was hot but so chlorinated that it was hard to breathe. Didnt stay long. Guidebook in room says 18+ but the tub says under 12 with adult only (or similar) so kind of confusingWould have liked to sit by the real wood fire in the great room but the seats were a hot commodity and when we finally got a turn on the last day there was difficulty getting the fire to start. No kindling. Nobody cleaned out the firebox. Wood was wet. This was really the only interaction we had with the staff and it wasnt very impressive as they just gave up after lighting a bunch of paper.Overall I really like this place. Lots of things to explore and the town of Angola is very close and has enough to add some variety. I even liked that you could opt out of having daily housekeeping for a $10 credit. My complaints are with the dated, worn decor and the friendliness of the staff. We got a good deal on the room but if we hadnt I would have been put off.

Probably the best hotel Ive been to. Employees are really nice, and the place is clean. Also love all the scenery, and the outdoor stuff you can do. One bad thing though is the amount of chlorine in the pool. I could hardly stand being in there for a long time because I could hardly breathe, and it was starting to burn my skin. Love the sauna though. 5/5 stars, and well definitely be back soon.

Potawatomi Inn is fine. The grounds and amenities being in the state park are truly wonderful, but the inn is a bit run down and needs some investment. Our bed was very hard. The pillows, towels and furniture are old. The shower drain was not connected and the window was broken. We worked there for two days and the internet in some of the common areas was really good. When you stay at the Inn, youre really choosing the location and the amenities, which are lovely, but your room wont be great.

I love it here! I came in the off-season, so I was unable to enjoy the beach, boating, and bicycling or other outdoor activities. However, I greatly enjoyed the time I spent with my close friends and their families. Theres an indoor pool and a huge indoor hot tub. There are also so many little places you can visit inside the Inn. Amazing and warm spaces. Ive heard others complain about the cleanliness, but I found anything but unclean. This is the first time that Ive ever slept under their comforter and used their pillows because they smelled clean and fresh. I also loved that I was able to get a room and bring two of my three pets with me. I would expect rooms to smell not very good, which is why I always bring air fresheners. However, the room smelled totally fresh when I walked in. I plan on visiting this location more in the future and Im going to tell everybody else about it. It is on beautiful Lake James and has beautiful views. I totally recommend you visiting this beautiful and historic end.

We love the Inn and the beautiful state park. Nice trails. Great for family get togethers, weddings, business meetings, basically any kind of group get together. Would give five stars but their chlorine in their pool and hot tub is out of control and basically renders them useless. The hot tub had so much chlorine it bleached our swimsuits and ruined my girlfriends hair. If they would get that under control I will change to five stars and edit my review. We were not the only ones stating concerns about the pools. Several customers were upset and complaining to the front desk in front of everyone.

As a 90s kid, the old-rustic-lodge interior felt nostalgic. It was awesome being able to show our daughter how things looked & worked from when we were kids ourselves. Theres so many activities to choose from that keeps any family busy. The scenery was so beautiful. We loved swimming in the lake & playing on the beach all day, we got some good color on us. The arts & crafts room has plenty of options, our daughter painted ceramic piggy banks while listening to classic Disney music. The outdoor patios & courtyard were modern, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed walking around & exploring the decorated halls. The gift shop was super cute & has a little something for everyone, I really loved the idea of the fill-a-bag of the vibrant colored rocks for only $5 bucks. The staff was great. Theyre all friendly, helpful & professional (except for the dining room Manager)._Cons_-The pool was fun but could chill on the amount of chlorine & install or use some A/C, as its almost impossible to breathe in the extremely muggy-bleachy air when its 93° outside.-The beds & pillows are not just firm, theyre like a rock. It was nearly impossible to get comfortable & woke up with body aches. Our shoulders, necks & hips are so sore from those beds. For the love, get new mattresses.-The deck & patio doors lock from the outside in the evening/night time. Youre able to go out but not get back in & are expected to walk allllllll the way back to the Main Entrance to re-enter the hotel. It was super annoying to keep having to call my Husband to come downstairs to let me back in every time a door locked behind me . Especially when huge unfazed raccoons roam near the patios, so I was not about to sweat walking a mile to the Main Entrance in the dark. Install entrance keycards for the guests to get back in or stop locking us out.-The historic dining room restaurant seemed promising at first but the food was so horrible. We went during the breakfast service. The potato hash browns were so bland, soggy and cold like they were made a week prior. The scrambled eggs were disgusting & inedible, I had nowhere to spit it out so I chugged water to swallow the eggs like a pill & I fought myself to not throw up.The wait staff were very nice & apologetic but the manger on the other hand seemed offended & was only willing to remove one plate off our bill even though all 3 plates were disgusting & untouched.Dont go unless you want to pay for inedible food that ends up in the trash .- Guests who bring their dogs, also bring them to the beach. Some dogs were very well behaved while others would bark non-stop for hours . Super hard to relax on the beach with an annoying barking dog. Be sure to watch your step on the grass & the beach, some owners like to leave their dogs poop for you to step in . Its gross.

The atmosphere of the Inn is great! We came on a weekend that the Inn was completely booked (as well as the cabins which we stayed in). There are lots of common areas for you to hang out in around the Inn and it has a lot of charm. We stayed in a queen cabin. In appearance, it was very nice. However, it was very small. The floors had a grit to them of not being swept. At first we were glad to.be staying in a cabin due to all the commotion over in the Inn. However, the walls are paper thin in the cabins. It sounds like your neighbors are in the room with you. The beds were uncomfortably hard, but the sheets were nice. Overall this is a nice place to stay for the charm of it, not so much for the comfort.

This is an old family favorite. Not like your chain hotels, things have character. Great patio and outdoor areas along with indoor entertainment areas that you dont find in most resorts or hotels. Last night we hung out in the library, pool, rec room, deck, covered porch, gift shop, ice cream parlor, great room, and a hallway lined with windows to view bird feeders that attract all your favorite species, and a made from scratch buffet! This was just the Inn! In the park you have Lake James, a regional favorite, a nature center, horseback riding, a toboggan run, tons of viewable wildlife, and an easygoing topography for hiking. There is seating and areas for fires around the hotel for nice nights. This has been a close destination for 20 years and is quickly endeared by the next generation.

The inn is showing its age in a few areas, which is probably why others have mentioned that it could use some updates, but there was nothing that particularly detracted from the experience. The staff were friendly, and the room was clean and comfortable. The bed was firmer than Im used to, but I slept as well as I could expect in a new place. I was very happy that plenty of pillows were provided, without having to go to the desk and ask for more. I was a little worried about noise - apparently there was a big family reunion or something going on during our first night there, and the place was packed with people and small children running everywhere - but we turned on the fan in our room for white noise and that effectively blocked anything from outside the room. Now, if only something could have been done about my roommates snoring! Something was wrong with the hot tub during our visit - it was running, but not hot - but the sauna and pool were great. We also spent a little bit of time in one of the downstairs lounges and checked out the game room. My only complaint is that our one meal in the inn dining room was really disappointing. I have fond memories of family meals at state park inns, and was especially looking forward to the breakfast buffet, but what we received was basically on par with a continental breakfast at a budget hotel (big pan of scrambled eggs, heat and serve sausage patties, frozen french toast sticks, etc.) except that it cost nearly $50 for three people! We opted to dine elsewhere for the remainder of our trip. Ill definitely go back to the park for hiking, the toboggan run, and other activities, and Ill probably stay at the inn again at some point, but unless they really revamp the menu and bring back the quality I remember, Ill avoid the dining room.

There is also a pizza place inside the Inn that is really good but the best part of the Pizza Place is the Ice Cream.. it is SOOO good!! During certain seasons you can check out the Park stables for horse rides and/or hayrides. The hotel also offers little activities such as Smores Kits, Activities where you go through the hotel and have to take pictures of different things to win. Also, all throughout the Inn are puzzles, games, books, etc and tables and comfy chairs to sit and relax, read, play a game, do a puzzle, etc. In the wintertime they have the Toboggan Sled, which is soo much fun!! We loved our time there. We celebrated our first anniversary and had a fantastic time! Just loved the park and the inn. Some things are dated but it didnt matter. Very relaxing. Saw deer on our bike ride. Nice set up. Plan to come back

This is a gem of a spot in a state forest! We were given a room with a great view and we loved wandering through a trail along the lake. I pass this way a lot and I look forward to spending more nights here in the future. My children loved the pool and hot tub too.

I have been coming here since I was a kid. Winter or summer, this place is worth the trip! From the pontoon rentals to the fireplaces to the whole ambiance of the place, it is a must do!

Staff is very helpful and accommodating. The young man who works the night shift and cleans public areas is especially so. We find it very easy to relax and unwind here. We have been coming for years.

Very nice place to stay with fantastic views. The decor is a bit dated and the rooms are not up to 5 star spec. If you dont mind early 2000s furnishings youll be fine. If you think its going to be like a modern resort youll be disappointed.

We went to go tobogganing and had a wonderful family weekend. The hotel has lots of great little sitting areas and fireplaces and the Sunday brunch buffet was delicious.

This resort would be perfect..... with a little maintenance and a very deep cleaning. The cabins need some TLC as well. And about a $50 per night decrease. But great views and excellent hicking trails!!
