This museum is a hidden gem in Andover! It is completely fee, to boot!It is small enough to digest in a couple of hours. The exhibits change regularly, so it never gets old.Artists include Pollock, Ansel Adams, Marie Cassatt, etc. There is a permanent exhibit of model ships. They have activity packs for small children. The workers are extremely kind and clearly love the museum.Parking is free and plentiful.

The Addison Gallery of American Art is located on the campus of Phillips Andover, admission is free and the public is invited, check the website for current info and parking directions. The wide ranging exhibits change on a staggered monthly cycle with many covering current topics, here a few photos of well-known items on display by Homer, Hopper, Moll -- (1715, rare North American Map), and Saint-Gaudens.Most of the items on display can be photographed, a rare opportunity when compared to several area museums, just ask the staff if there are any restrictions on display Items and remember no flash, (it can degrade many pigments).

This is a wonderful hidden gem... We will definitely revisit this museum! They balance there exhibits between modern and 19th century American art. The curators have done an excellent job of putting together small gallery shows that contrast the various artworks in wonderful fashion - -terrific!

I would say this is a nice place, but their security guys treated me so bad --just because I was the only young man around-- that I would never come back. That is one reason why young people never care about art in our towns. No one wants to go to a place where everyone sees you as a criminal. Also, be clear about your photography policy. On your website shows that people are allowed to take cellphone pictures while your security guys told me not to do it.

Unassuming location (tucked away in Andover), but a really nice gallery with a solid regular collection and a much larger than expected exhibition collection. That its free helped--especially bringing young children for a few hours.

Host to a unique and very valuable collection of almost entirely-American art, as well as several world-class traveling exhibits, the Addison is top-of-the-line for a small art gallery. Its low traffic and open admission to the public make it an ideal stop for art enthusiasts who happen to be in the area. However, the staff at the Addison are well aware of the museums value and do not hesitate to show off how much better they are. Reading a pamphlet guide written by a curator on her collection, one can only help but laugh at her well-intended but incredibly overblown, pseudo-intellectual explanations which replace thought with empty statement.Amidst works of truly great artists like Georgia OKeefe and Jackson Pollock, as well as unknown but equally unique and beautiful art, are selections which can only be described as pretentious. Such is the world of great art, but the Addison tries in vain to rank itself with the likes of MoMA.The Addison strives to be a world-class museum, and it definitely has an extraordinary collection of intriguing and valuable art, but keep in mind that youre probably not going to want to spend all day there.
