First time playing Old Works this past Friday. Clubhouse staff was super friendly. Checked us in and explained about driving range, cart usage on the course, cafe, and three hole practice course. Facility was extremely clean. The course was outstanding. I have never played on greens like this. Outstanding shape and tough to read. The grass used on this course is nothing like other courses in Montana. Lush, groomed well and felt almost spongy.Saw lots of wildlife on and around the course to include deer, marmots, and a variety of birds.Definitely will be back. If you have not played here, then look to schedule a time to do so. You will not regret it.

Played course for first time on September 30th. Loved the golf course. Beautiful course & scenery. Greens were lightning fast! Only thing I was disappointed in was the pro shop. Shirts & Caps were extremely limited. We were told it was end of season and merchandise was limited. While I understand that it was our first trip all the way from down in Texas so not being able to purchase a nice shirt or cap was disappointing!

This course is awesome. Difficult, fun and scenic. The remains of the old mill surround the holes and the black sand really lets you know youre playing somewhere special. They have great deals for all-day play and considering youre likely traveling here just for the course its worth playing twice. They have a beautiful practice facility complete with three bonus practice holes. Beautiful clubhouse and friendly staff, plus you get to say you played a Jack Nicklaus course (twice). Very worth your time to check it out.

Old Works is an absolute gem. A picturesque setting combined with impeccable course conditions made for an amazing afternoon. These are some of the best greens I have putted on in years. Thanks to the wonderful staff and the crew who are keeping in this course in such great shape. Will be back in the future!

Very unique course from the setting(old copper mine) to the black sand. Challenging from the back tees, a typical Nicklaus design. Some forced carries, more left to right shots, and large greens. Very good course for the $. Food was decent and pro shop is standard. Worth doing.

This community is lucky to have such a top shelf course. I’m an older, weaker hitter so I played the shorter tees and scored reasonably well. I was very happy.

Awesome course! New management is committed to returning it to the condition you would expect for a Nicklaus signature layout. They just took over in May but have already made a remarkable difference but tell me the best us yet to come.

Fun golf course and great staff. Interesting history and placards explaining site locations. Greens were in very good condition. Black sand is something else.

This course was in horrible condition! The fact that we had to pay 90 dollars per person for this was extremely unacceptable. Half of the time I had to move my ball into hittable grass because there was so much dead grass and dirt everywhere. Don’t waste your drive or your money, it is absolutely not worth it. The views weren’t great and every course I’ve ever played in MT has been better than this one. I was absolutely shocked at how bad it truly was.

Sorry to report that the Clubhouse mens restroom not up to even campground standards especially in Covid world we find ourselves today 09/14-15/20. Restaurant etc. fine and up to par. Course was set up for Junior Champ play, but ridiculous pin placements made the course ridiculous for general players enjoyment and acceptance challenge. Would prefer shutting down public play if needing to make championship placements that ridiculous. Cal and Oregon fire smoke is what it is. Some obvious sprinkler head deep holes around greens need attention. Otherwise expected Fall conditions albeit not really Fall yet. Hopefully get in Clubhouse maintenance and course planning thought.

Perhaps the best compliment I can offer, this golf course is truly unique. Im not from the Pacific Northwest so to me the views offered by this layout are breathtaking. The black sand traps are a very nice design inclusion, and every hole has beautiful fairways and yellow heather. The course is fairly flat (there are some elevated greens and tee), but I still found most of the holes had exciting shots to execute

This Jack Nicklaus designed golf course is built around an old mine and looks amazing. With stunning scenery and black slag (a by-product of smelting) in the bunkers. The course features 5 tees for varying lengths and difficulty, and a consistent mining theme is seen throughout the course. Lots of fun to play and a very nice course.

The city has let this course go. It used to be so beautiful. How can it be so dry, rough is clumps and mounds and dead grass everywhere. The city needs to take responsibility and fix it. Charging 85 to play this course is a slap in the face. They have grant money to keep this course going it’s not fully relying on tourists and town people so I don’t see the reason for excuses except the right person is not running it or the money is going somewhere else.

Very excellent golf course, in wonderful condition. range balls are complimentary with your round. great teaching lpga pro, lori savoy. very good food and service. i play here every time i visit helena, flathead, butte, bozeman or spokane. amazingly and gratefully very fairly priced. a unique and wonderful golf experience. the greens are sneaky depending on pin placements, but they run true, and hold softer approaches well. bring a windbreaker and a beanie! the weather can change 3 times in ANY manner over 18 holes! i probably didnt need to add that bit - after all, its montana doing that montana thing that montana weather likes to do...

On arrival bag boy offered no help. Lady in pro shop was very nice & very accommodating. The golf course was not in very good shape. Fairways had some bare spots which had been reseeded. Greens were slow and inconsistent. Pace of play was very slow. We quit after 13 holes. And, when we returned to clubhouse, a new bag boy - like the first one - was not at all interested in helping with our clubs or cleaning them. Service & food in the clubhouse was good. The layout of the golf course was certainly unique. I wish our experience had been better

I had heard about this place for years and never played it. When I finally came around to making a tee time I was not disappointed. The course is immaculate and the views while playing are even better. Stay on the fairway and you will have a great round, others will find it challenging. To top it all off stop in the clubhouse for food and drinks afterwards, the staff is incredible and will treat like a regular.

Review №34

The course is great. Its a very unique and challenging design. The three stars is due to the service I received from the gentleman working in the pro shop. I was in the market for a super stroke putter grip. I asked the gentleman if I purchased a grip, would he be able to install it before we left for our round in an hour. The gentleman stated he was busy with scoring for a tournament but once he had some help he would be able to install it. An hour later, prior to starting our round my putter had not been touched. I told them no big deal, I would check back after our first nine holes. After playing nine holes and grabbing lunch, my putter was still sitting there untouched. I asked the nice gal at the desk if they were going to get to it before I finished the back nine. She explained he was busy but that she would remind him. After we finished I was handed my putter. The grip was not installed. The younger guy working told me the gentleman who could install it had left for the day. I left my putter with the gentleman at 11:30am, we finished at 5:30pm. I wouldnt have purchased the grip had I known they would not have time to install it. It was an overall poor experience, not what I would expect from a top notch course.

Great, fun course layout... Wish wed planned our trip better to avoid aeration, but it happens. Views of the valley are beautiful especially this time of year with the colors beginning to change. Really enjoyed all the incorporation of the areas history both on the course and in the club house. Wind picked up half way through and can see this course being challenging particularly from the tips. Huge greens...well designed. The black bunkers look cool as hell and play well. What else....

Challenging course where every hole has been designed with a specific in mind. Not a course that requires driver very often, although the par 3s are lengthy and difficult to make birdies on. Greens and pins are accessible to the right shots, but even the slightest mishits may prove to be costly. Tee boxes and fairways were immaculate.

Review №42

This course isnt what it once was IMHO...still a good bang for your buck but price has snuck up as much as is possible for a Super Fund site that got millions in tax dollars to build. Still, a wonderful example of reclaiming land that was completely toxic and making it a useable, sustainable, recreational space. A nicelyblaid out Jack Nicklaus signature design with tees for every level. The maintenance has fallen off a bit from the old days and greens seem to have taken a beating, either from winter kill or wash outs from the hill sides sliding down or some combination of events anyway. I go play it once or twice a year.

Very unique couse as its built on reclaimed smelter property, pretty hilly, narrow fairways, i thought the speed of the greens was great, might be slower then somepeople like. Fairways were a bit tough in places, but its early in the season for them as the mountains around them still had some snow on them.

Jack designed it (that should be enough). The clubhouse is beautiful and the staff is always incredibly friendly. The price is very fair for a round of golf. One of the most unique features of the course is the bunkers. Made from the slag around Anaconda, MT they are a shiny metallic black giving the course a truly one of a kind look and with the design coming from one of the games greats it should be on any golfers list of courses to play in Montana.

From the moment we arrived, we felt like royalty (bags loaded, clubs cleaned before and after and cart ready to go)! Then we took in some spectacular views while on the range (complimentary range balls too!) waiting for our tee time. The course was in beautiful condition and the views incredible! Be warned the course is difficult and youll want to shoot straight or it could be a long day; the fairways are tight which required lots of draw and fade shots, as it was windy. All in all the highlight of our trip was this course and we cant wait to come back and play again, definitely worth the nine hour trip from Canada!

I have a great friend whose company did most if not all the work that Jack Nicklaus company designed. And what a great challenging course for most golfers. We have a foursome which goes over every year for 4 rounds and have always had a great time. The green fees are extremely reasonable for a Nicklaus designed course and it has always been in great shape when we play (mid-July). It was built on land that used to be the copper smelters and the sand traps are filled with a black granular by-product of the smelting process (plays a little heavier than regular sand but it close). Its only about 10 miles off of I-90 and shouldnt be too difficult to walk on for an afternoon round.
