Weve been here a couple times in the last few weeks and had an excellent experience. What I particularly like is that the volume isnt cranked up absurdly like it is some theaters. Its also clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. It was a little slow this weekend and having two registers open for ticket sales would have been nice but in all other respects it was fine. They appear to have some decent deals in refreshments if you come back often enough but I certainly wouldnt purchase the heavily marked up items without some kind of deal.

It overall was a good experience .. good picture and sound obviously... The only critique I have is basically that of the entire theatre Industry.... EVERYTHING is so expensive!! $5 plus change for a drink that would cost literally $2 anywhere else....at any fast food or sit down restaraunt!! This is absurd.. if theatres wanna draw in more people they really have to lower prices on food and drinks at least by 1/3. I would see say more movies if that was the case... Way more!!

Its the only place to see a movie in town and their sound and screen arent bad, but if youre from any respectable urban area expect to be significantly underwhelmed. It has very small screens and seat count. The overall setup for the theater itself is rather cobbled together as well with many things feeling very cramped and poorly thought out.If this wasnt the only option in town Id go elsewhere, but as it is I go here a few times a year. The staff has always been friendly so it could be worse.

I went last night (a Monday) at 7:30pm to use a free popcorn coupon. Not only were all the doors locked and the concession stand closed (no popcorn) the girl sitting on her cellphone didnt even come to the door. What kind of business is this? Perfect example of how limited we are in this town for entertainment.

For the price you pay to see a movie you should be able to buy better seating. Some of the chairs have bags over them. There is no cushion left to the seats. The aisles are narrow. Theater is small.

The butter station for the popcorn and freestyle Coke machine are a nice benefit as well as the cozy size, but theater is quite outdated with missing, broken, and work seats. Pretty bummed they didnt keep the newer theater down the road open though. Our movie selection in NE Michigan is slim enough as it is. Employees are nice and helpful and prices are fair. Bathrooms are too small. Good rewards program with AMC.

This theater may be old but it has history, character and a great staff that goes up and beyond for their customers. Is it in need of repairs yes but is that the fault of the people working their NO, they do the best they can with what has been given to themThis is the only theater in a 100 mile radius and I am thankful we have this theater and the lovely staff who runs it . I hope AMC reads the reviews of this small town theater and sees that the people love the theater and want the theater but just needs a little TLC I rate the overall experience of it with five stars for the staff, the concessions, and the history of this old building

If you got a spare $100 take your family to see a movie in the least comfortable seats youve ever sat in.(tickets and popcorn) But try to sit close to the speakers so you can hear it over the neighboring movie, and consider one of those bleacher cushions to help tolerate the seats. Popcorn was tasty and the staff was friendly and professional.

Waaaaay over priced. Run down. The popcorn was gross. For as much as you pay for it the popcorn should at very least be freshly made. The seats were old and worn out. I took my three year old here for his first movie. Just me and him. It cost me nearly 40 dollars. For 2 tickets, a popcorn and a drink. I couldnt imagine trying to take the rest of our family. Like I said, as much as it cost i think the the theater could atleast be well maintained.Never again.

Crazy long line getting into theater- the 1 ticket cashier is also the concession clerk. Seats are literally falling apart and not comfortable. Only movie theater in area, so no other choice but to go to this dump of a theater. A small renovation could easily make the State Theater a true Alpena gem.

I personally love this theater. The newly updated concessions stand is nice and easily accessible. The butter being self serve is so much better than behind the counter. If you and your company cant agree on how much you want you dont have to argue in front of the staff. One thing that isnt so great about this theater is the seats. All of them are old and some have trash bags taped over them so people dont use them. Some have been removed completely and not replaced.

Pr
Review №24

A updated concession area with plenty of options and Coke Freestyle Machines are really the only redeeming qualities of this theater.Below average screens, poor sound quality, and truly terrible seating. One theater has approximately half a dozen unusable seats, and that isnt counting seats with missing/broke arm rests. The staff does their best though! Nothing but respect for them. However, AMC desperately needs to invest. A historic building with lots of potential to become a very, very nice theater..

Theater is far out dated. The seats are disgusting covered in human oils, butter, dead skin and all kinds of things. The seats and arm rests are all broken. The bathrooms are filthy and the theater in general feels scummy and disgusting. The picture quality is sub par, the sound is abysmal and the prices are far too inflated for the experience you receive. They charge ridiculous prices for concessions. The theater is in such disrepair and poorly maintained that its worth the drive to Gaylord to have a better experience and even with making the trip you save money all around.

If it werent for the fact that the state building itself were a historical part of downtown the place would have been shut down Im sure. Half of the cinemas are unused due to disrepair and in the ones that are working half the seats are broken. Not mentioning the soundproofing is falling apart. Stepping away from the general looks of the place though, Ive had more than my fair share of disappointments stemming from equipment failure. The one saving grace is their concession stand has an OK assortment of food.

Ja
Review №47

The picture quality is relatable to that of an old vhs tape... which would be watchable if it was centered on the screen even the slightest bit. Don’t see a movie that has any captions or text because half of it will be cut off. The Audio sounds like it’s being played through my dads old record player. Don’t even let me mention the seats. I would rather sit at the dmv for 12 hours waiting to get my revoked license back than sit in the disgusting and obnoxiously loud seats at this theatre. All of these things I would be able to overlook if they played the movies for free but at 9.50 a ticket I’d rather download it illegally online and watch it with Chinese captions at 480p than go to this theatre. I really didn’t think it was that bad until I went to literally any other theatre and realized it’s quality is below standard. But... at least the popcorn is good if you can afford it.

I know theyve only got three screens to work with, but whoever is in charge of booking the movies to show needs to be fired. The selection has been *atrocious* lately, with low-rated films held-over for weeks on-end while high-quality releases never even get a chance.

The seats were absolutely horrendous. My girlfriend and I went to see a movie recently and we were both moving around in our seats trying to get comfortable even before the show started. The screen quality was awful. I am exagerating only slightly, but it looked like someone draped a bedsheet and bungie corded it to be used for the screen. The sound was not that bad, but not great either. But the seats, never again. Driving to Gaylord next time we decide to see a movie.

Alpena doesnt have a good theater. Its old, it smells, the seats are terribly uncomfortable. There are only 3 movies showing at a time. The screens are mildly damaged and it detracts from the experience. And while concessions are expensive at every movie theater, they are 30-50% more expensive here. We often drive to Gaylord to see movies for all of the above reasons. Alpena is their captive audience because there isnt another good theater around within in hours drive!
