What a little gem of American history. Gary did a fantastic job of bringing that history to life with his tour. The museum is set up for self-guided tours, but if theres a docent available, youll have a much better experience - the stories are great! Pat in the gift shop was super friendly and helpful as well. A bargain at only $5!

Wonderful and enlightening, the tour of this early hotel shows the dining and temp quarters where George Washington stayed on his many trips from Mt Vernon to the city. A hub of current events and public gatherings, it is steeped in history. Great guides.

My wife and I, were driving down from Pennsylvania and decided, after viewing their website, to make a reservation for Thanksgiving and our anniversary. The site showed a great, old colonial fireplace and wood paneled walls, the kind of atmosphere we were looking for to celebrate the occasion. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed to discover that the room was not what was shown, but a meeting hall in another part of the building. It was very cold and at first would not let us inside, but after knocking on the door, a group us were let in to a very small coat check area. This is when I saw this room with round and very long tables, like for a wedding reception. Our reservation was for 6PM, but it seems they were not ready for this group of over fifty people. After a few minutes, we were finally seated at the end of this long, twelve foot table. The whole experience was NOT what we expected. Drinks took a long time to be served and food was left on the table to pass around, to serve ourselves and they even ran out of somethings (cranberry sauce!). The food was cold and not worth the a hundred and fifty dollar, meal tab. We felt RIPPED OFF!Dont waste your visit, even if George Washington ate there, he didnt dine where we did and Im sure the food was better!Doc

I celebrated my grandmothers 80th birthday there and we had a great time. Your there for the history and the food is good. I have been there at least 20 times of the years and I love it. I think if your fretting over the cranberry and drinks your kinda missing the point. There are a ton of great foodie restaurants in Old Town...so go with the 1700s vibe and staff in 1700s dress and enjoy.

It was mildly interesting, but My Vernon was much better. If youre in Old Town Alexandria, and you absolutely love knowing every detail of George Washingtons life, then maybe youd enjoy this little detail. But if you havent yet been to The Torpedo Factory or taken a ghost walk, do those first by all means.

Self guided tour of a really old but well preserved building, complete with the common George Washington area stories all old spots here have. It is nothing over the top special but it is really neat to see such old buildings standing and open for a visit. I highly recommend stopping in for the 30 or so minutes it takes to walk through. At $5 it cant be any cheaper to see something old and cool! History buffs I highly recommend!

The Tavern has a rich history going back to Slavery, the Revolutionary War, and through the Civil War. It was a favorite restaurant of George and Martha Washington with an intimate private room for their dining pleasure. Many gala social events were held in the upstairs Ball Room with lively dancing to the music of skilled entertainers.Interestingly, the Father of West Virginia, Francis Harrison Pierpont, boarded there as Governor of The Restored Government of Virginia after The Commonwealth seceded to join the Confederacy. Installed by President Lincoln after WV split with VA to become a Free state, Pierpont served as the Governor of Virginia from 1863 until 1868.The original Ballroom is now on display in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC.The period food and colonial craft beers are both delicious and in a great spot to partake in lovely Alexandria. They will carry you back to another era.

I learned a lot of history from this Museum. The posters and signs are very informative, with a detailed history of great people having lunch, slept and sung at this tavern, like Hamilton, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Its also great to know that this place used to celebrate parties and big events from the past. The people here did a great job maintaining everything at this tavern. I highly recommend every tourist to visit this place.

I would like to point out first off that I didn’t eat inside this tavern I’m leaving this because I took a walking tour with a classroom and as part of the tour we stopped outside this tavern for the spooky story. The story that our guide told paled in comparison to the fall risk potential of leaving this restaurant in the dark . I helped along with my friend and elderly couple exiting the building after their meal and was terrified they were going to trip and break a bone. I did see on this stair way it says “handicap entrance” with an arrow . What this sign doesn’t help is that older people don’t always look up and see that , they were focused on each little step and never paid attention . They were also on a large tour bus that prevented them from parking and entering the other entrance. Two more groups exited while I watched and prayed no one else fell out.

Meant for Gadsbys Tavern restaurant:If you want delicious food and drink with some colonial charm this is the place! I had the lemon chicken with rice. The food was excellent with the right amount of spice. The servers and staff are in period costume. The height of the meal - a toast by one of the colonys great unknown orators, Master Hall, a gentleman farmer who surprised and engaged us all with his wit, humor and charm. Cheers to you, sir! A tavern with an amazing pact on the Revolutionary War. Most, if not all of the Founding Fathers visited this tavern and ,actually, colluded and conspired here to plan the American Revolution. I was unable to enjoy a meal from the restaurant (needs a few days reservation in advance) but my friend had her wedding and reception here. The reception was held on the ballroom, providing a beautiful view of old Towne Alexandria through multiple windows surrounded by colonial decor.

If you’re in the area you have got to stop by and check this out. The history here dates back to some of the very early days of our country. The ways in which they did business the ways in which they stored ice the ways in which they preserve food is very interesting to me. I applaud the early founders of our country who were inspired and creative in their technique.

Another place of Washington DC area history! This tavern and museum is amazing! Visualize yourself sitting there in the 1800s. Staying in the hotel/museum attached. Show your receipt from the tavern for a savings on your admission to the museum. Send a postcard to someone, courtesy of the museum. See the ballroom where one of our presidents inaugural ball took place. There is just so much history to transport you back to that period in time when our first president meet important people, ate and drank. We were there for restaurant week so ate from their pre-fix menu and were served by costumed servers. Just an overall great experience! If these walls could talk...

Parking is available in the area, but you must find it and pay. The Gadsbys Tavern complex is two connected buildings--the functioning restaurant on the corner and the museum next to it. This is a quaint revolutionary war era museum. Unfortunately, they had a couple episodes of water damage this year, and are still in the midst of restoration as of August 2015. Only two of the three floors are open, the first floor rooms/displays are well organized to demonstrate the explanations of daily life and the business of the tavern. The second floor ballrooms are still used for events, and the third floor is currently closed for repairs.

The place was not crowded. The only reason we got bread 20 minutes later was because we asked the waiter to feed the children. Food arrived more than 30 minutes later. My pot pie was lackluster and my friends fried oyster po boy sandwich was so bad that she peeled the fried layer of every single oyster so she could eat it. The kids menu burgers were really good though and huge. The only reason it gets 3 stars instead of less was because the kids menu burgers were good.
