I parked on the street by the elementary school and walked 0.5 mile to the trailhead since I don’t like making it obvious I’m hiking and making the car vulnerable to break ins, in the actual hiking area parking lot. The air quality was terrible to I just went to the top of the hill, first hilltop open area, of the Madrone Trail, and turned around. It was still a nice but very short hike. A bit isolated out there today but I saw a couple of people. I didn’t do the 8-mile loop but I would eventually hope to get to return to try to do it.
Beautiful mature oak trees up the hill
Beautiful trail. Nice grades to make it a bit challenging. Gorgeous views. Watch out for rattlesnakes sunning themselves in the rail.
Beautiful streamside entrance to the Las Trampas regional wilderness. But beware of poison oak, especially near the beginning! The parking lot tends to fill up on weekends.
Very beautiful place with lots of trees and creeks. Its also very green and a great place to take your dog. However, Id be wary of the hills (as they can get a bit steep) and the mud.
Never went there
This is a great local trailhead, particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change. Come back in winter when the creek is flowing. There are plenty of mushrooms and swapmy creatures like salamanders that one can find if theyre keeping their eyes peeled. A lot of kids come here to drink and smoke pot, often evident by leftover booze or candy wrappers, but for the most part its serene and mostly clean. There are mutiple different paths you can take, ranging from very minor elevation to some pretty steep areas. If you stick to the main trail its a pretty easy romp through the woods. The higher you climb in elevation, the better the view, obviously. A hidden gem.
Small parking lot. There are three trails you could take once past the gate. The middle follows a creek into the hills. You will see rattle snakes in the summer and fall, newts in the spring. The side trails can be strenuous but you will be rewarded with great vista of the valley below and Mount Diablo.
I grew up on Holiday drive, we crawled all over every inch of those hills for many years, we caught orange newts and racer snakes, saw king snakes and even found a big fat dark scorpion once but, never saw a rattle snake so, I dispute that comment on one of these posts. There are lots of Rattle snakes on the foothills of Mt. Diablo but we never saw any in these hills.
Great place to short hike, limited parking lot
