Great hike for most people, supervised children and dogs. Theres the summit trail that starts near the peak of the loop where the H3 can be seen as well. When not muddy, both the loop and summit trails have striking views. Theres lots of available parking as well and restrooms. But like many places, the earlier you go, the more parking options youll have. Also the full loop can be a few hours to complete. If you dont have the time, you can always turn around after the peak and follow the path back the way you came to the entrance of the hike. Just be mindful of other hikers youll meet going backwards as some parts of the path are so narrow only 2 people can stand side by side at a time. Ultimately, one of my favorite hikes that lll continue to recommend for years to come

Probably one of the best hikes on Oahu! Pretty easy hike with a great view of H3. I was surprised to see how well maintained the trail was. Also, keep an eye for the WWII plane crash site. There’s not a lot left since it crashed in 1944 but you can see some pieces of it.

My very damaged knees managed this trek and the view at the end was worth it.I did it only one way cause I read that the loop would involve walking up the road to the upper car park. Also dont forget a water bottle. It was a good walk and not too warm. My doggy loved it too.

Nice trail. Not that intense. Tons of cool looking eucalyptus trees and roots. Nice walk to bring your dogs along on. In total its about 4.5 miles and takes 2-3 hours to complete. By the trail head there is a bathroom and drinking fountain. Bring a couple liters of water. Also there is a picnic area with a bunch of benches, but there were a lot of mosquitoes in that area. Only place on the island Ive really seen them so far.

Perfect hike for almost every age hiker. We did the 4.5 miles in almost exactly 2 hours. I see a family with younger kids might take 2.5-3 hours depending on the number of stops/breaks needed. This is a definite must for travelers as well as multiple times for the locals. See u on the trails!!! If you like my review, please follow me :)

Great family friendly hike with beautiful views that are surrounded by the aroma of nature. Pick cherry guavas and hear the sounds of birds and clashing of trees in the forest and take pictures along the way of different types of ginger, pine ,paper trees and other Hawaiian native plants . Enjoy the peace for a short stroll 1/2 way of the hike or go further along for a half a day hike for a little get away from the every day to day responsibilities!

This is a great hike to do alone or with the family. A moderate hike. There are some spots that are very muddy and slippery. Other than that not a bad hike. I did it with a 7 month old baby in a front carrier and without spikes. Took about 2.5 hours at 28’07 pace. We went up to the second part of the parking right before the restroom, yes it was a struggle to walk up the hill first however, it was easier to end the hike where we parked.

I’m rating this one highly for a few reasons. The trail is one of the better maintained ones on Oahu. I’ll let you in on a [not so] secret... this state is seriously disorganized, incompetent and doesn’t spend money on repairing parks and beach amenities. So when you go to the beach or park, nature will wow you... but the facilities that the state/ city and county control are in dire need of repairs. This place is a drive from town (trust me, you do not want to sea with the bus!!) but if you have a car to get there, there’s actually a good amount of parking!Next, there are bathrooms, which is rare at a trailhead. Not just one bathroom but two bathrooms. Which is definitely a plus and there’s usually toilet paper!Next, the trail is quite wide and not overgrown like most places. The type of trees that are there provide lots of shade which is great in the summer. I’ve hiked there in the rain, and it actually is not too muddy except towards the lower part of the loop. There’s some nice views, a few good resting places, it’s dog friendly (even my senior dog is ok on that trail). You don’t have to climb anything. And since it’s a loop, the scenery changes the whole way. It’s kid friendly as well.Bonus is there’s also camping, which is a different type of experience than beach camping. And if you want to check “culture” on the list, there’s a healing heiau (altar or place of worship) there as well you can visit, pay honor to and learn more about (please be respectful!).Pro tip- bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the covered tables. You might see some tame “wild” pigs. Actually quite likely!!

Good hike, about five miles. Not too difficult, but parts of it will make you sweat. Pretty shaded most of the way. Saw a couple of hikers with their dogs. Be sure to check the weather, because it can get muddy when it rains. Takes you uphill through luscious scenery and offers views of the harbor and H3. In the area, theres chickens, different kinds of birds, and watch out for the wild pigs! Try to do this with a partner, because theres parts that if you take a wrong step, you could end up in big trouble.

Pretty 5.5 mile hike mostly on flat or gently rising / declining terrain. My wife, one year old daughter and I did it in about 2 hours. Great place for exercise and fresh air. A few nice views of Pearl Harbor and the H3. A plethora of various tree species can be seen as you make your way through the forest. Some parts of the loop feel less like you’re in Hawaii and more in a park somewhere on the American west coast. Trail is dirt all the way and some parts will get muddy when it rains.

As others have mentioned, it can get a bit muddy. As a new hiker I would say this was a bit hard for me although there was an area of the trail that I was able to jog on. My GPS clocked the trail at 4.70 miles, which took me about 2 hours and 10 minutes, which included stopping to take pictures.

This trail is about a 3 on a scale of 1-10. It is very shaded, the route is clear, and the distance is long enough to spend a fair amount of time walking and getting some exercising. The only drawbacks for me personally is that while there are a few nice vantage points to see H3 and the Kailua beaches, for about 80 percent of the hike youll be looking at just trail and trees, I personally like waterfalls, streams, or beach views.

This is my fav trail on Oahu, mainly because it was the first public trail I ever hiked here. I love the views of the Koolau Range from here and also the view of Halawa Valley & H3. The trail is about 4.8 miles according to signage along the route. You can approach the trail from either the upper or lower end. I recommend parking in the lower lot, near the heiau, and start your hike at upper end, at the top of the parking lot. Its best to do the hike at least a week after it has rained or be prepared to deal with semi-muddy conditions near the stream. There use to be visible wreckage on the trail from a WWII B-24 that crashed, but it has since slid down the hillside. Its roughly around the halfway point of the trail. If you look closely you can still see pieces of the wreck. I have Sprint and I usually have good coverage thru-out most of the trail. Sunscreen isnt really needed unless you burn real easily and Ive never seen a need for bugspray in 15 yrs of hiking this trail. I would recommend bringing about 16 ozs water and a light snack as it takes about 2-3 hrs to complete this trail.

Not much to rave about. Only view is the H3. Nice canopy of trees makes it nice to hike even in mid-day heat. If you do the loop, you end up at the lower parking area and have to go uphill on the road to the upper. No shade on that part. Feels like a long hike that kind of just goes on and on.

I read some reviews on Google and Yelp and was pleasantly surprised by this hike. Some reviews suggest feeling unsafe in the parking areas and while Im sure there are opportunities for unpleasantness, simply being aware of your surroundings goes a long way.We started the hike by parking in the lower lot, and walking up to the upper trail head. The upper portion of the trail sees a moderate elevation gain into the ridges. Continuing on the loop, towards the end, you are then climbing out of the valley section of the loop, so there is considerable more mud as youre essentially hiking up a stream bed. On the day we went there hadnt been much rain, so it wasnt muddy enough to cause us any issues. Had we started on the lower trail, however, wed have been going downhill through this section, which (in my opinion) would have been harder to do since Im more likely to slip in mud going downhill than uphill. It is really cool how the predominant vegetation changes drastically every so often along the trail (bamboo, conifers, eucalyptus, etc.). Its like each section of the trail is a different environment. There were a few downed trees that required going over or under along the trail, but by and large this is an easy trail for anyone that doesnt have any accommodation requirements. We took our 7 year old and there were plenty of families with younger kids waddling along during our time. There are some parts of the trail that are excessively root-y, but it was all very easy to navigate. This is definitely a family-friendly, pet-friendly, solo-friendly hike. The elevation gains happen gradually (except at the very end for us) and there are so many great places to get a great view.

Very nice easy hike doable in under 2 hours. A few areas with minor mud, but I think one could probably even wear slippers here (just watch your step anyway because some tree roots can trip you) and its almost entirely covered so no harsh sun to worry about. A great exercise loop. Easy loop trail, nearly impossible to get lost on. Some viewpoints to glimpse H3. Varying forests including Norfolk Pine and Ironwood.Do not park in the lot at the entrance (beside the temple).Follow the sign to the right to get to the parking lots. Note the speed humps...you will likely bottom out in your rental car.The first parking lot area will give you more uphill during the hike and downhill back to your car. The trail head is down the hill past the washroom and to the left.Drive a bit further up a hill to another larger parking lot (youll see a washroom on the right, to the left of it is the trail head). This willgive you the opposite...more downhill during the hike but uphill back to your car.Expect to get muddy (like most every other hike on Oahu). There is water and washrooms at the end. Sometimes they are open. Sometimes not.Wear proper hiking shoes (NOT flip flops/slippers/bare feet, unless youre local) and bring water. Approx 5 miles return to your car.

You can also see native koa and ohia trees and, if you’re lucky, the endemic Oahu elepaio (monarch flycatcher), which are thriving here.
